You bet I've been listening.
Franklyn MacCormack was one of the mainstays of my 4 years at Northwestern. I fondly recall many a night having his dulcet tones accompanying me as I studied long into the wee hours of the morning. Somehow I never got around to my studies or assignments until late in the evening or the early hours of the morning.
Oh, Evanston, being the national headquarters of the WTCU, was a dry city in those days so I couldn't blame the bars there for my getting to my course work so late. Perhaps I spent too much time in the gym, or with coeds, or with my uncle Eddie "Pianola" Barnes who emceed the show nightly at the Club Alabam on Rush St.
Anyhow Mr. Mac, Wayne King and the Meisterbrau Showcase and I became nightly companions. I did meet him at the WGN studios in '61 or '62 ~ probably '62 as several of us from the N U Athletic Dept were there for P. R.

GREAT MEMORIES
Loved your interview with Franklin MacCormick , the sound of his voice brought a world of memories
Remeber growning up listening to his show on WGN radio in Chicago. First as I remember was
the Reserve Show Case and later the Meister Brau Show Case. He was formerly with Wayne King both
as an anouncer and read poetry to music like the "Melody of Love" wich was done that night reading with the
band. Remeber his readings of Don Blanding and many others.
The nite of the closing of the Aragon on that last night Franklin MacCormick and Cliff Mercer announced the
program for the Waltz King.. I was listening the nite the closing of the Aragon with Wayne King and he did the
Melody of Love.
I have a recording of that hour long broadcast and could burn to a CD and send to you if you would be interested.
Again thanks for bringing back some great memories.
I just found your site and will try to listen often. Again let me know if you want a copy of the Aragon broadcast.
BobMayhew [Jackson, Ohio USA]
You really made my day.....Thanks again...BM

Hi,
This is what we have on this.to say; we have 3 LPs of this recording,
For the simple reason, most of them are different in condition for different cuts,
It had been a favored recording by DECCA [STEREO DL75134] Volume 2, GOLDEN FAVORITES
Wayne King & Orchestra cut 4 on the A side of the LP. Narrated by Franklyn Mac Cormack;
'WHY DO I LOVE YOU',
Wayne King copied the idea of narrating it himself too sometimes, do to its popularity.
IT WAS FIRST READ AS A POEM OUT OF DESPERATION TO LOOK TO FILL AIR TIME by Franklyn
IT WAS A HIT.
At later times FRANKLYN used BILLY VAUGHN's LP as accompaniment while reading poems on air.
Greg Sherlock was 17-18yrs of age working on first assignments, when heard, that Franklyn McCormack
was going to to promote MEISTER BRAU at a liquor store in WOODSTOCK , IL. in 1969.
GREG Sherlock's request for an interview with Franklyn MacCormack was accepted .
It was aired first in
WALWORTH , IL. WE STILL HAVE IT, COULD AIR IT FOR YOU TO
LISTEN TO, IN THE EVENING IF YOU LIKE., TELL ME WHEN ARE YOU
An ORLANDO, FL. collector also have it, we are checking on it. Also we can produce a copy for you too.
THANK YOU FOR TUNING IN & MAKING
RWPR.net YOUR MUSIC CHOICE!
Regards,
ALEXA
PS:Franklyn Mac Cormack passed away in 1971 on June 12th. he was married to the famous brew company's relative,
so he had 10 yrs.of solo sponsorship for his midnight show. ....' The MEISTER BRAU SHOW CASE'.....
while the puplic mourned for him, WGN assigned Cliff Mercer to continue the show for awhile.

I also greatly appreciated having a copy of your tribute to me, and I'm very honored that you created that show. As you know I did a phone interview with Bill Miller and I think we had a good conversation. I'm afraid I've missed it on the air, but did hear one he did with KEELY SMITH, that was lot of fun and brought back memories of "old" Vegas......I have been packing all day, preparing for my cruise on the Crystal Harmony, beginning tomorrow in San Francisco. I'll be entertaining on board in Alaskan waters for about a month.... I'll miss being able tune into RWPR during that time, but you can bet I'll be telling all the passengers about you... JULY 2005
July has brought another STAR to the Remember When Radio's Music Library. FRANCINE CHERRY has sent us a sample CD by JACKIE CARLYLE, who is a beautiful and incredibly talented singer/songwriter of our time. Her original lyrics are inspired by personal experiences. We had featured her song "My Father's Spirit" on Father's Day dedications, which made me cry and want to listen to her selections over and over. It reminded me of my father passing away years ago, do to an illness, that took the mind and capabilities away of a fantastic creative mind of a superb fine artist. WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE JACKIE CARLYLE AS OUR PICK OF THE MONTH ARTIST.
She wrote to Greg Sherlock: .....Alexandra wanted permission to play my song from my CD "Into The Light" and I gladly give it. Thank you for making me your highlighted artist for July, I feel honored to have my songs played on RWPR & VSFM as Radios selections. I also gave permission to Alexa to play the "Diamond Cutter" as an introduction to one of her pages at VSFM. looking forward to get to know you more in the future...... "When I started to write, I did it because I wanted people feel less alone in the world. I wanted to leave myself open for words come through me to express things, that other people had hard time expressing. I never went into it for the money. If that came, so be it, that would be unexpected. I will do anything for charity, if it helps someone somewhere, I am happy.".......
JACKIE CARLYLE is a pure diamond among humanity, we are happy to have her in our Hall of Fame.

Francine is a tireless worker for Don and so heartwarming to see a wife so dedicated to her husbands's talent. Don's voice is truly a gift and I applaud you for introducing him to another generation of fans. I hope you will do another show featuring Don.
I was wondering also how can I find out on what station your show airs in Nashville. I have caught Don Kennedy and Bill Miller on WAMB but may be I am just not tuning in at the correct time to catch your show. Thank you for the wonderful our.

I have thanked him for his donation toward programming, he responded.......
_________________________________________________________________________
CHARLIE SHAFFER responded in kind.......
Dear Alexandra & Greg,
Thanks so much for the note. I didn't list any requests, because I could not improve on your
programming as it is. Now that you mention it, though, I will comment that I particularly like two
singers from the late 50's, early 60's era, JESSE BELVIN and BROOK BENTON. I'm referring
to Belvin's RCA material and Benton's Mercury records. Not necessary the hits, but lesser heard
stuff off the albums, or B sides. That something I have noticed about your site, you don't only play
the big ones, you give us seldom heard records by good artists.
I have always liked the FOUR ACES. They had a knack for picking the right songs, then singing
the heck out of them. I'm disappointed to hear that Al & Stella are not doing any new shows.
I didn't hear that many of them, but enjoyed the few that I did hear.
From time to time I get inquiries about the 4 Aces from around the world. This because on my
web-site there is a picture of me with them, I think maybe when the people do a search on them,
my site may turn up because of that picture.
...They appeared at the Sands Hotel here in Las Vegas in 1983. I was playing there myself at
that time and of course attended their show....Stella was in the dressing room at that time, and
I didn't get to meet her...but we hung out with the guys at the bar for a few minutes. ...
They were extremely nice, and autographed my "Best of the 4 Aces" LP......
I presented AL with an album I had done that year which included "IT'S NO SIN" with me singing
all the voices , 4 Aces style. ...... A couple of weeks later, I got a package in the mail from him,
including a nice letter about my album, two solo albums by him , and some sheet music of a song
he wrote. A Real Class Act.
I returned from China last week to find an e-mail from a man in Amsterdam asking for a print of
that picture and info how to contact Lou and Sod. Of course I don't have any such info, but did send
the picture. SUCH IS THE POWER OF THE INTERNET. Without it I wouldn't be able to hear RWPR.
Naturally I would be flattered if you use my e-mail on your site, and of course you have my permission.
ALL THE BEST, and keep on, keepin' on ... CHARLIE
PS: I have done 2 or 3 interviews with Bill Miller over the past 3 years, but could never listen to his show
until now. WHAT A TREAT. I LOVE THIS SITE!

....Nope!!... We have not released the Country album in CD or DVD form. I agree with you. It was a
GREAT album... and the tunes and musicmanship was very good, too...but, the general public really
turned deaf ears toward that one! Mostly because it merely said.." Music in the Country Manner" on the
album cover. The followers and fans of the RMO got scared when they've seen the word "Country".
I guess they thought it would be a lot of twanging guitars etc....... Who Knows!
Take care..... I'm only home for two weeks and then it's on the road again....

You really took me back to my days at Northwestern doing an all nighter and listening to the
Meisterbrau Showcase with Franklin McCormick in '59 and '60. He kept me awake as I hit the
books after hitting the tackling dummies during football practice during the daylight hours.
He had a voice and a half, didn't he? Almost made me pursue a career in radio.
HOW ABOUT AN HOUR OF LOUIE, SAM and the WITNESSES?
I listened to a DJ in NYC, William B. Williams, who was / is a legend in the industry.
His "Battle of the Baritones" every Saturday was something to behold - if one can behold a
radio broadcast. Too bad some of these early DJ broadcasts were not recorded same as
the old radio 1/2 hour and hour long variety shows.
You might consider putting together something of this nature.
There were some awesome female band vocalists. Jo Stafford, Helen Forrest, Kay Starr,
Kay Armin, Peggy Lee (my all time favorite), Julie London ( what did Jack Webb have?)
could go on and on.

THANK YOU NORM, as always it is a delight to read your mail.
